American University of Bahrain (AUBH) selects AWS & Almoayyed Computers Middle East (ACME) for their cloud Adoption journey

AUBH is the first comprehensive, purpose-built, American-style co-educational university in the Kingdom of Bahrain and is supported through the Government of Bahrain’s Mumtalakat portfolio. The University offers a holistic academic journey for students and unique approach to education that fosters interaction and collaboration between students, faculty and the professional community.

American University of Bahrain (AUBH) is committed to continuous innovation, technology and platform improvements to create a great experience for its users.

Almoayyed Computers Middle East (ACME) recommended American University of Bahrain (AUBH) to leverage the beauty of cloud and host the new cloud environment of the American University of Bahrain using Amazon Web Services solutions.

Almoayyed Computers Middle East (ACME) team analyzed the existing workload, current and intended usage and designed a highly customizable, modern, cloud-based, and highly scalable system. The implementation strategy included a multi-tiered solution that was developed iteratively using agile framework.

AUBH needed to create secure, stable, and modern technical environment for its thousands of students and faculty & staff, Beginning the cloud journey by moving its web environment to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the university focused on becoming a campus with no data centers.

AUBH had an existing setup on physical servers and wanted to host new applications using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its capabilities such as reliability, Pay as You Go model, no upfront commitment and highly scalable infra as in near future they are expecting considerable growth in number of students and so the number of systems and its generated traffic to the servers which can become hindrance to scale up when it is at on premises servers.

AUBH foresaw critical issues with network and infrastructure complexities and it would have resulted in big infrastructure over provisioning cost for underlying hardware which may not be required all the time.

Almoayyed Computers Middle East (ACME) helped customer host mission critical workloads on AWS Cloud platform with near zero downtime. Leveraging their application development and networking expertise ACME has migrated AUBH workloads securely.

ACME has used various AWS services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to provision server, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) an object based storage for Backup, Elastic Load balancer to load balance the traffic, AWS Key management System (KMS) to generate maintain and rotate encryption keys, Amazon GuardDuty for threat detection, AWS Security Hub for comprehensive view of your high-priority security alerts and compliance status, AWS IAM for users and access management and Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring etc.

Why Amazon Web Services

AUBH considered on-premises virtualization solutions as well as other cloud providers, but ultimately chose Amazon Web Services (AWS) because it is cloud leader and provides plethora services which will be a best fit to their current and future requirements. From an architectural perspective, infrastructure and automation to the customer were key factors.

Migrating a Mission-critical Website Without Interrupting Service

AUBH selected Almoayyed Computers to assist with moving the mission-critical workload to AWS because of its demonstrated expertise in architecting and implementing solutions on AWS for the public sector.

Almoayyed Computers Middle East(ACME)—the first Bahraini company to become an AWS Partner Network (APN) Advanced Consulting Partner—joined the AWS Public Sector Partner Program in 2017 and has obtained AWS validation as an Authorized Government Reseller and an Authorized Commercial Reseller. Almoayyed Computers employees collectively hold the highest number of AWS certifications of any Bahraini company, including as Certified Solutions Architects, Certified Developers, and Certified DevOps Engineers.

"Joining the AWS Public Sector Partner Program has been a good way to emphasize to the Bahrain public sector that we have the qualifications and commitment to serve them," These qualifications help us win new business and are a big reason that the Bahrain government has identified us as one of only three vendors to assist its agencies and ministries with the shift to AWS."

ACME have evaluated various compute, storage, networking option to host AUBH workload. The company then used Elastic Compute Cloud (AWS EC2) service to host the application’s AWS infrastructure, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for object storage, and also other solutions for auditing, monitoring and security includes Amazon CloudWatch, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon GuardDuty etc.
