How Ministry of Youth & Sports (MOYS) accelerated their Application deployments through AWS & Almoayyed Computers Middle East (ACME)

Executive Summary:

As part of the Government of Bahrain’s AWS Migration journey, initiated by Information & eGovernment Authority (IGA), Ministry of Youth & Sports (MYS) decided to migrate their Webservers, Content Management Servers, Batch server, Workflow servers and the underlying Database to AWS. Many times, there was a requirement to deploy some applications and drop when not required which meant more storage and compute power to be provisioned but not required all the time. Considering the scenario, we had to come up with a solution (platform or technology) to shift workload in order to get on-demand and scalable infrastructure.

Considering the scenario, we had to come up with a solution (platform or technology) to shift workload in order to get on-demand and scalable infrastructure.

Challenge:

It was necessary to extend existing AD server on AWS cloud before application migration which was used to perform authentication mechanism. While performing upgradation it was unknown how much Storage, Compute capacity will be required. Many times, applications were deployed and dropped due to its improper working or workload which was no longer required, which was really increasing a lot of efforts when the same application had to be re-configured again next time.

Users were expected to access pre-production and production environments from anywhere they want in order to perform activities specific to application configurations and testing. Database management was tedious task which was expected to manage by someone on user’s behalf so that developers can concentrate on application functionality. Upgraded database version compatibility with upgraded application was not clear which required extensive rapid testing.

In case if this challenge was not addressed customer might have faced huge issues due to network and infra complexities also it would have resulted into big infra over provisioning cost for underlying hardware which may not be required all the time.

Solution:

To prevent downtime, Almoayyed Computers obtained a backup copy of the redesigned MYS workload. The company then used Elastic Compute Cloud (AWS EC2) service to host the application’s AWS infrastructure, which included Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for object storage, Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail for monitoring, and Amazon Relational Database (Amazon RDS).

Also, MYS was aware of AWS would be able to provide with solutions beyond existing workloads.

Migrating a Mission-critical Website Without Interrupting Service

MYS selected Almoayyed Computers to assist with moving the mission-critical website to AWS because of its demonstrated expertise in architecting and implementing solutions on AWS for the public sector.

To achieve high availability and performance, The application relies on Elastic Load Balancing for automatic distribution of incoming traffic and RDS multi AZ deployment, and Amazon Shield for managed protection against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

Deploying onto AWS also made it simpler to avoid interruptions of service for the site's users and required almost no changes to employee workflows.”
